Russell Westbrook has played a key role for the Sacramento Kings in his first season with the team. The former NBA MVP joined the Kings in the offseason via free agency after he decided to opt out of the final year of his contract with the Denver Nuggets.

In 14 games played so far this season, Westbrook has averaged 14.4 points on 43.6% shooting, 6.6 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 1.0 steals in 28.5 minutes per contest. The 37-year-old is also knocking down a career-best 2.1 triples per contest on a 40.5% clip. Westbrook was recently promoted to the starting lineup by head coach Doug Christie, replacing veteran guard Dennis Schroder.

Unfortunately for the Kings, not even Westbrook’s strong play has been enough to help them find success early in the season. Sacramento is coming off six straight losses and is currently 3-11.

Their most recent defeat came at the hands of the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday, 123-110. Westbrook made history in the loss by moving up to 18th in the NBA’s all-time scoring list. He has 26,406 career points and counting.

Westbrook also continues to make waves off the basketball court. One of his personal initiatives is the Russell Westbrook Why Not? Foundation. On Monday, the nine-time All-Star took to social media to share some news about an upcoming event.

Westbrook’s foundation will be distributing meals to anyone and everyone at Jesse Owens Park in Los Angeles, which is where he played basketball growing up. In 2023, the court at the park was named the Russell Westbrook Community Court.

The event will be on Thursday, Nov. 20. This will be the 14th year of annual food distribution drive. In a previous interview, Westbrook said that “his mission goes beyond the world of basketball and he believes he was born to give back.”

As for his basketball, Westbrook will be back on the court with the Kings on Wednesday. They get a tough test against the defending champions, the 14-1 Oklahoma City Thunder, in a road game at Paycom Center. It will be an opportunity for Westbrook to face off against his former team in his old stomping ground as part of Sacramento’s current five-game road trip.
