Russell Westbrook’s Gesture During Lakers-Kings Catches Attention

Russell Westbrook’s reunion with the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday marked his third straight appearance of the 2025-26 NBA season, and it turned out to be his best game yet in a Sacramento Kings uniform. After spending most of the offseason as a free agent, Westbrook signed with Sacramento shortly before the season began, giving the Kings a much-needed veteran presence in their backcourt.

It was Westbrook’s 10th game against the Lakers since being traded by the franchise in 2023 after one-and-a-half rollercoaster seasons. While the Kings ultimately fell short against the Lakers, the 36-year-old guard reminded fans of his trademark energy and confidence with a standout performance.

Westbrook posted season highs across every major category, shooting 6-of-12 from the field and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc to finish with 18 points, six rebounds, and six assists. But it was one second-quarter play that had everyone talking.

After grabbing a missed Marcus Smart layup, Westbrook drove to the rim, spun around Jake LaRavia, and converted a layup—pausing mid-air to stare him down before making the shot.

The moment immediately went viral among NBA fans.

“Russ looked him dead in his face, and without saying a word, he said, ‘Oh, I can’t repeat that on here,’” one fan wrote.

“Getting crossed over by a 45-year-old Westbrook is nasty business,” another joked.

“How could teams not pick this guy up?” asked one fan.

“Nahh getting cooked by Russell Westbrook in the big 2025 is crazy,” one user said.

“I wish Russ played for the Hawks,” another fan added.

“RUSS STILL A STARTER ,” a fan remarked.

“Unc still got it,” another posted.

Despite Westbrook’s strong outing, the Kings fell 127-120 to the Lakers, who were without LeBron James (right sciatica) and Luka Doncic (finger, leg).

Austin Reaves led Los Angeles with a career-high 51 points, along with 11 assists and nine rebounds, improving the Lakers to 2-1. For Sacramento, Zach LaVine scored 32 points, while DeMar DeRozan added 21 points, six rebounds, and three assists.

The Kings, now 1-2, will face the defending NBA champions, the undefeated Oklahoma City Thunder (3-0) next on Tuesday – another reunion for Westbrook, who spent the first 11 seasons of his career with OKC and remains one of the franchise’s most iconic players.
