Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs routed Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks last night with a score of 144-118.
The recently named All-Star Wembanyama led the way with 30 points, 14 rebounds and 6 blocks. The 21-year-old has already dominated the association, and he is literally just getting started. As crazy as it sounds, can he eventually be the greatest of all time?
The Early Case
In only his second season, Wembanyama has made an All-Star team, an All-Defensive First Team, won the Rookie of the Year award, and has led the league in blocks. He will likely make many more All-Star and All-Defensive teams throughout his career.
Being 7’4″ and able to move the way he does is something no one has ever seen before. The ability to hit threes, handle, and play superb defense makes Wemby a true alien.
In his first 100 career games, he has more points than LeBron James and Kevin Durant. He has more rebounds than Patrick Ewing and Anthony Davis. He has more blocks than Shaquille O’Neal, Dikembe Mutombo and Hakeem Olajuwon. Maybe the wildest stat: Wemby has more threes than Trae Young, Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry (!).
These incredible numbers are very hard to ignore and it is impossible to pretend that Victor Wembanyama cannot be the greatest to ever play.
Championship Aspirations
To truly fit into the San Antonio Spurs culture and kingdom, Wemby will have to bring home some championships. No matter what people say or think, rings affect someone’s legacy very much.
For him to achieve GOAT status, the Spurs have to surround him with title-caliber squads. In recent days, a De’Aaron Fox trade to San Antonio has gained much traction due to his frustrations with the Sacramento Kings.
The pairing of Wembanyama and Fox would be lethal. The duo would give the rest of the league problems for years to come, and the one-two punch would be impossible to contain on a nightly basis. Moves like this would definitely put the Spurs in championship talks in the next few seasons.
An Incredible Season
Wemby is averaging 24.6 points, 10.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 4.0 blocks in 33 minutes per game this season. These usually are numbers for veterans but he has proved that he is a different breed. The next face of the league is hungry for more, and people have to be on notice.
