Chris Paul recently admitted that retiring from the NBA is on the horizon. The San Antonio Spurs guard just turned 40 last month, and he will hit unrestricted free agency in a few weeks.
As Paul’s immediate future remains uncertain, the 12-time NBA All-Star said his family will be a major factor in his next destination and eventual retirement.
“It’s with my family more than anything. My son just turned 16. My daughter is 12. The past six seasons, I’ve lived without them. I go to San Antonio, Phoenix, Golden State — they were in Houston with me — Oklahoma City… I’ve been around a few teams, but I’ve been away from them the last six years. It’s a little different. That’s the conversation,” Paul said on the Pat McAfee Show.
“You know, my daughter actually hoops now, so before I flew out here, I was in the gym with her for 20 minutes. With kids, sometimes you gotta do short sessions, so I was in 20 minutes doing ball handling with her, and it was priceless,” he added.
Chris Paul was fairly productive in his first full season with the San Antonio Spurs. The Wake Forest product averaged 8.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 7.4 assists, and 1.3 steals per game on 42.7 percent shooting from the field. More importantly, he managed to play all 82 regular season games.
Last December, Paul received a wholesome tribute from San Antonio after he surpassed Jason Kidd for second all-time in NBA assists. He also leapfrogged Kidd in the all-time NBA steals list a few weeks later.
If Paul delays his retirement, he could play for either the Los Angeles Lakers or the Los Angeles Clippers next season since his family is primarily based there.
