Long-time NBA analyst Chris Mannix strongly believes the San Antonio Spurs are the team to watch if the Boston Celtics ultimately decide to trade Jaylen Brown this summer.

Almost everyone from the 2024 championship roster is on the table (except Jayson Tatum), as the Boston Celtics are aiming to avoid the punitive penalties associated with being in the second apron of the luxury tax.

“The team I’d watch the closest with Jaylen Brown is probably the Spurs,” Mannix said via NBC Sports Boston. “Sure, I think (the Spurs would) love to make a run at Giannis, but do the Bucks ask for Stephon Castle? Like, is that on their wish list? And if it is, I can’t see San Antonio doing a deal like that.”

“I think if you’re Boston, you’re not going to ask for a Stephon Castle. You’re not going to get a Stephon Castle in a potential Jaylen Brown deal. You would get the No. 2 pick back in return. You would get the Devin Vassells, the Keldon Johnsons, future first-round capital. That’s something I’d watch if and when the Giannis Antetokounmpo stuff shakes itself out over the next few weeks,” he added.

San Antonio Spurs linked with Duke center in potential draft day move

The San Antonio Spurs have the second overall pick in this summer’s NBA Draft. According to Krysten Peek of NBA TV, the team might consider trading down to get Duke center Khaman Maluach to pair with Victor Wembanyama.

“Another buzzy name tied to the Spurs is Maluach, a 7-foot-2 center out of Duke. The Spurs could essentially be building twin towers with Wembanyama and Maluach, and there is an appeal to drafting another young big that can learn and grow alongside Wembanyama,” Peek said.

“It would be very unlikely that the Spurs would shock everyone and take Maluach with the No. 2 pick but they could be looking to trade down or package the No. 14 pick for a shot at the talented center,” she added.
