Even in preseason, all signs are pointing to the San Antonio Spurs and Victor Wembanyama taking a big leap in their progression.
The San Antonio Spurs are currently in the best position any NBA team can be in heading into the 2025-26 season.
Victor Wembanyama worked out with Kevin Garnett and Hakeem Olajuwon during the summer, and the results so far have been impressive.
Even rookie Dylan Harper has been impressive in preseason, showing that the Spurs have a genuine one-two punch for the future.
And in their start to the preseason, the Spurs have done something they haven’t been able to in almost a quarter-century.
With their win over the Indiana Pacers tonight, the San Antonio Spurs went 4-0 in the preseason, with just a few games remaining.
The last time the Spurs went 4-0 in the preseason was before the 2001-02 season. That went down as an important season for the Spurs for two major reasons.
The first being that it was the debut season for Tony Parker, the French point guard who went on to become a multiple-time All-Star and the 2007 NBA Finals MVP.
Secondly, it marked the first career MVP win for Tim Duncan, who would go on to win it again the following season.
Could this start from the Spurs be signaling their intent ahead of the new season? There are many who believe that Victor Wembanyama is an MVP candidate next season.
And if he plays similarly to Duncan from 2001-02, the Spurs center will have a chance to earn the award.
Spurs are 4-0 in the preseason for the first time since 2001-2002.

The Spurs would win 20 of their first 24 games in the regular season.
It was Tony Parker and Bruce Bowen's first season in San Antonio.
It was also the Spurs' last season in the Alamodome.
While expectations aren’t through the roof for the San Antonio Spurs this season, there are many who believe they need to start showing their improvement with their win-loss record.
Despite Victor Wembanyama playing really well in his first two seasons, the Spurs had two straight losing seasons in 2023-24 and 2024-25.
Now, as the Spurs solidify their young core and have a reliable All-Star guard in De’Aaron Fox, there is no excuse for them not to at least reach the playoffs this season.
Yes, the Western Conference is more competitive than ever. But the Spurs have the tools to compete and reach the top brass of the West.
