The San Antonio Spurs will see one of their bright young prospects take his game to another level next season.
You would be hard-pressed to find a team with a better young core than the San Antonio Spurs. For three years straight, the Spurs had a top-4 pick in the NBA Draft.
Those picks turned out to be Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and the most recent arrival, Dylan Harper.
Victor Wembanyama was the hottest prospect to enter the NBA since LeBron James. But Stephon Castle really surprised everyone, coming out of the shadows to win the Rookie of the Year award.
But even with concerns that Castle could be overshadowed by De’Aaron Fox, the Spurs youngster is set for a brilliant sophomore season.
In his rookie season, Castle missed just one game and put up excellent numbers. He averaged 14.7 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.7 rebounds en route to the Rookie of the Year award.
Many felt that Castle cemented himself as the Spurs’ third option, right behind Wembanyama and Fox. However, with Dylan Harper’s arrival and Fox’s long-term extension, there are some worries.
But given that Castle established himself under the new permanent head coach, as Mitch Johnson’s most reliable star, expect him to get the most minutes between him, Fox, and Harper.
And with an increase in minutes, along with a solid learning experience playing next to Chris Paul now in his back pocket, Castle is set to have yet another strong year.
Don’t expect him to start scoring 20 or more points per game, as he won’t have the ball in his hands enough to do that.
But don’t be surprised either when he asserts himself as one of the best young two-way prospects in the NBA today.
For any fans of the San Antonio Spurs, as strong as their core is, they know that they are not ready to be title contenders this season.
Their young stars are still inexperienced and will need to develop further in order to finally mount a challenge to the best teams in the Western Conference.
But, the Spurs could break their playoff drought this season, and earn some much-needed postseason experience for their big players.
Given the dire state of some teams in the Western Conference, the Spurs actually have a very good chance of earning a playoff spot next season.
