San Antonio Spurs Release 3-Year NBA Player
USA TODAY Sports

Paul Watson most recently played in the NBA during the 2021-22 season when he was a member of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

He averaged 3.4 points and 3.0 rebounds per contest while shooting 34.3% from the field 23.1% from the three-point range in nine regular season games.

Earlier this week, Watson signed a deal with the San Antonio Spurs, but he has now been waived (according to the NBA's official transaction page).

Paul Garcia of Project Spurs added more details.

Via Garcia: "The Spurs have waived Erik Stevenson and Paul Watson.

Strong chance both players end up with Austin.

Roster down to 19 players now"

Deals like this happen a lot where a player signs a contract and then is quickly waived.

Therefore, it would be no surprise at all to see Watson play for the Austin Spurs at the start of the season.

The 28-year-old has played three seasons in the NBA for the Atlanta Hawks, Toronto Raptors and Oklahoma City Thunder.

His career averages 3.8 points and 1.9 rebounds per contest while shooting 42.0% from the field and 39.2% from the three-point range in 46 regular season games (he has also appeared in two NBA playoff games).

As for the Spurs, they are coming off a year where they were the 15th seed in the Western Conference with a 22-60 record.

They missed the NBA playoffs (and the play-in tournament) for the fourth straight season.

That said, the Spurs drafted Victor Wembanyama with the first pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, so there is a lot of excitement around the franchise.
