San Antonio Spurs: Victor Wembanyama Cements ROY Lead With Monster Stat Line
Scott Wachter-USA TODAY Sports

Victor Wembanyama is on the lead in the Rookie of the Year race , and the San Antonio Spurs star might have just sealed it following his latest performance against the Brooklyn Nets.

Wembanyama made plenty of history in their Sunday game, including a couple of NBA firsts that further highlight why LeBron James called him an alien even before he arrived in the league.

Victor Wembanyama Explodes in San Antonio Spurs vs. Brooklyn Nets

Wembanyama was phenomenal in the Spurs vs. Nets showdown, exploding for a monster stat line of 33 points, 15 rebounds, seven assists and seven blocks.

The Nets just had no way to stop him, as Wemby shot 14-of-26 from the field. With that performance, the French superstar became the first player in the history of the league to have a 30-15-5-5 game while shooting 50 percent from the field.

Wemby did get plenty of help, with Devin Vassell and Keldon Johnson combining for 49 points as they take the 122-115 OT victory. On the other hand, Brooklyn struggled offensively big time, with Cam Thomas the only player exceeding the 20-point mark with 31 points.

While the Spurs are still the worst team in the West, they are definitely rising with Wembanyama leading the way. The 20-year-old also continues to show that he’s good as advertised.

More History for Victor Wembanyama

Aside from his insane stat line in the game, Victor Wembanyama made another history as he added more to his season tally. He now has over 200 blocks, 100 threes and 75 steals this season, which is the first time that it happened in a campaign.

That’s right, Wembanyama is not only the first rookie to have done it but also the first player ever, via StatMuse. That speaks volumes of how versatile he is and why he is highly regarded as a top young talent in the NBA.

With that being said, it’s safe to assume that Wembanyama is already running away with the Rookie of the Year award. Chet Holmgren did give the San Antonio Spurs star some challenge early on in the season, but with all the numbers Wembanyama has put up in the second half of the campaign, the separation is now really clear.

With a few more games left on the season, it remains to be seen what other history Wemby will make. But sure enough, with the way he’s playing, fans can expect more from him.
