Savannah James Explains Why She's Overprotective of Bronny

In the media's ever-indulgent pursuit of keyword supremacy, Bronny James's name has become synonymous with money. You can find articles about every aspect of his life, from what shoes he wore to practice to what car he drives. Does any of it matter? Not really, but a journalist needs to eat.

In fact, you could argue that the whole Bronny hype machine is a bit of a farce. Let's be honest, splitting time in the G league, Bronny is unlikely to have any real impact on the Lakers organization this season one way or the other.

In the ceaseless hunt for the next Bronny story, pundits and journalists alike are willing to denounce or praise Bronny based on what gets the most clicks that day—and all the faux influencers of the blue-check Twitter mob are gluttons for those likes.

Understanding what's real and what's fabricated about the young guard is like trying to read a novel in the dark. In truth, his story is to be expected, and his stat line doesn't really teach us anything about his long-term potential. The only thing we can say for certain is that he's young and obviously needs more experience if he's going to succeed in the NBA. Well, that statement could be made for 99% of pro basketball players. The only difference is that his dad's famous.

If we stop and think about it for a second, isn't it a little weird to have such high expectations (or unfiltered hatred) for a 20-year old kid who's not even old enough to drink? Well, Savannah James agrees with that sentiment.

On Nov 12, 2024, Bronny's mother, Savannah James, shared with Everybody's Crazy co-host April McDaniel her thoughts about what it's like to be married to LeBron and to be the parent of an international celebrity. Unsurprisingly, it's a hodgepodge of great, weird, and infuriating experiences.

When McDaniel asked Mrs. James how she deals with all the Bronny haters out there, Savannah replied, "I tried to stay away... Not stay away from the game, just stay away from the people so I don't hear the banter." Mrs. James later expanded on the point, saying, "I'm an overprotective parent, too, and there's only so much that you could take, especially when these are kids... They're going to sixth grade or fifth grade or wherever the next level is. We're not talking about NBA contracts coming from these like AAU games or recreational games, so it took a lot. I had to learn. I feel like that's really when I started to learn breathing techniques because I had to talk myself down from cussing people out."

As fans, it's easy to forget that the majority of pro athletes are still kids (or close to it). They might have mansions and Ferraris, but most of them barely have a credit score. People are people, and we're all spinning around this confusing planet trying to figure out how to make sense of the relentless onslaught of information shoved into our eyeballs each day. Maybe I'm getting older and softer, but how about we just leave the kid alone for awhile.
