The MVP isn’t going anywhere. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has agreed to a four-year, $285 million super maximum contract extension with the championship-winning Oklahoma City Thunder.

Gilgeous-Alexander’s contract extension gives him the richest annual salary for a player in league history, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Gilgeous-Alexander had a historic season for the Thunder. He averaged a league-best 32.7 points per game during the season. SGA added 5.0 rebounds and 6.4 assists per game as well.

In the postseason, SGA averaged 29.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 6.5 assists per game. Gilgeous-Alexander’s play earned him not only the MVP of the regular season but also the Conference Finals and NBA Finals MVPs.

This places Gilgeous-Alexander in rare company. He became just the 11th player to win the MVP and Finals MVP Award in the same season.

The others are Michael Jordan (four times), LeBron James (twice), Larry Bird (twice), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Willis Reed, Magic Johnson, Moses Malone, Hakeem Olajuwon, Shaquille O’Neal, and Tim Duncan.

Gilgeous-Alexander also joined Jordan (six times), George Mikan (twice), Joe Fulks, Abdul-Jabbar, and Shaq as the only players in NBA history to win a scoring title and an NBA championship in the same season.

The bill may be high for Gilgeous-Alexander, but the Thunder do not mind. He’s a generational type of talent that has now brought Oklahoma City its first NBA championship.

SGA is worth the money.
