Just like the last time, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is already in elite company after winning his second straight NBA MVP award. But the Oklahoma City Thunder superstar now has a chance to accomplish something only three legends in league history have ever achieved.
With OKC back in the Western Conference Finals, Gilgeous-Alexander is now chasing back-to-back NBA championships to go along with consecutive MVP trophies.
If the Thunder finish the job this season, SGA would join only Bill Russell, Michael Jordan, and LeBron James as players to win consecutive MVPs and back-to-back titles.
That is the level of history now sitting in front of the 27-year-old guard. The four-time NBA All-Star became just the 14th player ever to win back-to-back MVP awards after another dominant regular season.
The only players to ever win back-to-back MVPs and back-to-back titles are Bill Russell, Michael Jordan, and LeBron James.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has a chance to join them this year.
He averaged an impressive 31.1 points, 6.6 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.4 steals while leading the Thunder to another 64-win campaign despite major injuries throughout the roster.
More impressively, he has continued that form into the playoffs. Gilgeous-Alexander is averaging over 29 points per game during Oklahoma City’s postseason run while helping guide the defending champions back to the conference finals.
But, standing in OKC’s path is Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs, a team that won four of five meetings against the Thunder during the regular season. Many around the league view the matchup as the NBA Finals before the NBA Finals.
Still, the Kentucky alum has consistently answered every challenge placed in front of him over the last two seasons.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander may have just won his second straight NBA MVP award, but that did not stop the backlash from immediately arriving.
After ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that he officially secured another MVP trophy over Nikola Jokic and Victor Wembanyama, debate across social media exploded almost instantly.
Even former NBA star Dwight Howard jumped into the conversation by publicly backing Wembanyama instead.
“Wemby my MVP! But congrats Shai what you doing is incredible,” Howard posted online shortly after the announcement.

Meanwhile, Shai’s own teammate, Jalen Williams, appeared ready for the discourse before it even began.
Still, Gilgeous-Alexander’s resume ultimately proved impossible for voters to ignore. Now, with a second consecutive MVP secured, Gilgeous-Alexander sits one championship away from joining the legends of the game.
