The Oklahoma City Thunder are on a generational run lately. After clinching the NBA title last year, the OKC are looking to get it again. However, despite a worthy performance and an NBA MVP award, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is having a hard time bashing out criticism around him.
However, recently, Shai heard the “Flopper!” chants raining down from the crowd at Frost Bank Center during Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals. Though the Thunder star made it clear afterward that the noise never bothered him.
“It does nothing,” he said after Oklahoma City’s 123-108 win over the San Antonio Spurs. “Doesn’t fuel me, doesn’t discourage me. It’s part of the game. I’ve been dealing with it a long time. I don’t really hear it.”

The chants erupted midway through the third quarter after Shai Gilgeous-Alexander drew another foul while attacking the rim against rookie Stephon Castle. Spurs fans loudly mocked the reigning two-time MVP, frustrated by his ability to consistently get to the free-throw line.
But the irony was hard to miss. While San Antonio fans spent the night chanting at SGA, the Spurs continued sending him to the stripe anyway. He finished with 26 points and 12 assists despite shooting just 6-for-17 from the field, calmly knocking down 12 free throws while helping Oklahoma City erase an early 15-point deficit.
More importantly, the Thunder never lost control emotionally. Even without Jalen Williams, Oklahoma City responded with one of its best team performances of the postseason. The Thunder bench exploded for a franchise playoff record 76 points, led by career playoff nights from Jared McCain and Jaylin Williams.
Despite Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s impressive performance, he continues to divide NBA fans with his playing style. Even critics like Colin Cowherd are beginning to acknowledge just how effective the Oklahoma superstar has become.
Cowherd recently labeled Gilgeous-Alexander the “Mayor of Flop City,” criticizing the reigning MVP for how often he falls to the floor while hunting fouls during the Western Conference Finals against the San Antonio Spurs.
But despite the criticism, Cowherd also admitted there is a reason Shai Gilgeous-Alexander keeps succeeding.
“SGA is closer to a CPA, right? He just drops 29. It’s surgical,” he added. “For the record, Michael Jordan averaged 9.9 free throws and nobody talked about it.”
"He is officially, in Flop City, the mayor. Population: One… Not all great players are fun to watch."

That comparison became even more relevant during Game 3. While Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had a relatively quiet scoring night by his standards, he completely controlled the game in other ways.
