Shai Gilegous-Alexander, after winning the MVP award and leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 2-0 series lead over the Minnesota Timberwolves, is the best player in the world.

However, before he took over as a perennial All-NBA talent, he still showed promise, although it took a season of mentorship under Chris Paul for him to hit his stride.

During Gilgeous-Alexander's second NBA season and his first in Oklahoma City, he and Paul shared the backcourt for one season, and the friendship has paid dividends.

During Game 2 against the Timberwolves, Paul was in attendance to cheer on his old team, and after the contest, SGA reflected on what Paul means to him.

"he has been great," said the MVP after the game. "Not only like a big brother, mentor, but just like a friend. He's always there to lean on. He was the first guy in my life that I was close with who achieved the things that I wanted to achieve. And I really leaned on him for advice. And not only basketball advice, like business advice, taking care of your body advice, like handling a family when they don't live with you, like there's so many things that you deal with as an NBA player, especially of his caliber, that go under the radar. And his guidance with that has been great."

Paul, who is close not only with Shai but his entire family, was sitting in the first row next to Hailey Summers, SGA's wife. Shai made it clear that he wouldn't be able to accomplish what he has without Paul's mentorship and Summers' support, and he was happy to see the two of them sitting together, even if he joked about it.

"I had to like double-take," he joked with reporters. "I was like, 'Who's that sitting with my wife?' I got a little tight, but then I saw it was Chris. I was like, 'Oh, cool.'"
