Shams Charania Shares Crucial Update on Future of Celtics Roster

The Boston Celtics ended a 16-year title drought by winning the NBA championship in 2024. The Celtics cruised to the title last year, losing just three games in total in the postseason. They're now hoping to become the first team to repeat since the Golden State Warriors did so in 2017 and 2018, and have a good chance at doing so.

The Celtics finished the 2024-25 season with a 61-21 record, which was good enough to be the second seed in the East. They dispatched the Orlando Magic in five games in the first round of these playoffs and look set to go on another deep run.

What makes the Celtics ever so difficult to beat is that they might just have the best roster in the NBA. To say they're loaded would be an understatement, as they have the likes of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Jrue Holiday, Derrick White, Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford, and Payton Pritchard among their ranks.

A team this good is unlikely to stay together for too long, though, thanks to the apron rules in the new CBA, and the Celtics aren't an exception. NBA insider Shams Charania was the bearer of bad news for Celtics fans on "The Pat McAfee Show," as he stated changes are likely coming this offseason.

"I can tell you, the rest of the league is bracing for some level of change from the Celtics roster this offseason," Charania said on The Pat McAfee Show. "Sources have been telling me for weeks now that the Celtics will be exploring trade options in the offseason.

"This iteration is just not going to be sustainable for this team," Charania continued. "And no one around the organization, from players to staffers, would be surprised if there were changes coming to this roster."

Charania added that the Celtics have five players scheduled to make at least $28 million next season, and their salary bill would be around $500 million. He is expecting changes, so this could well be the last shot at a title for this core.
