Shannon Sharpe shreds Anthony Davis: 'Do you understand what's expected?'

The Los Angeles Lakers are three games into their NBA season. Anthony Davis has participated in all of them. He's had one bad game, which came on opening night against the Denver Nuggets. In the other two, he's had back-to-back 30-point outings. Yet, Davis is still receiving criticism for his performance against the reigning champions.

On an October 30 episode of First Take, Shannon Sharpe shredded Davis for his struggles against Denver.

"I remember that game against Denver," Sharpe said. "... What top-75 anniversary guy can give his team one rebound in the first half and zero points in the second half and escape criticism? Wait a minute, AD, do you understand what's expected of you? ...The expectations are different for you, AD. So, you should be mad at yourself...Guys are like, 'he played both ends of the court.' That's what is expected of you. They gave you a max contract."

It's fair to hold a team's star players accountable when they struggle to perform. However, context matters too. The game against Denver was the first of the season. Players shouldn't be expected to be at their best on opening night. Furthermore, Davis has had two monster games since then.

Yes, Davis is the lead guy for the Lakers now. Yes, his struggles hurt the Lakers and potentially cost them the first game of the season. And, yes, he hasn't been consistent or healthy in recent years. But if you're going to criticize his bad nights, you have to praise his good ones too. It's unfair to focus on one 48-minute stretch without mentioning the two impressive outings that followed.

The lights shine bright in Hollywood and Davis is learning what it's like to be the face of the Lakers. LeBron's presence has shielded him for most of his tenure with the Purple and Gold, but that time is coming to an end. It's time to look past opening night. Focusing on the games to come is more important. NBA players struggle on occasion. They're playing in the most competitive league on the planet.

Credit them for how they bounce back. It's the least they deserve.
