As the season approaches its halfway point, the Philadelphia 76ers, with a 15-26 record, are outside the playoff picture. Nick Nurse's team has struggled with significant injuries, including Joel Embiid's limitation to 13 games.
As things stand, Philadelphia is just as likely to miss out on the playoffs as they are to qualify for them. There's even a chance they could slip down into deep lottery territory. The Sixers made multiple big moves this summer, including adding Paul George. Their current position in the Eastern Conference will be a genuine cause for concern.
During a recent episode of "The Hoop Collective Podcast," ESPN's Brian Windhorst described Philadelphia's season as a "disaster."
“This is on the horizon of being one of the worst disasters for a season in the modern era of the NBA,” Windhorst said. “I don’t know if I would quite say it’s Lakers when they got Dwight Howard and Steve Nash, this is going to be fun, because I don’t think that was quite the same. There is no Kobe on this roster but like this was the champions of the off-season. Like let’s go, let's compete with the Celtics and you know we’re having conversations about their Top 6 protected pick. This is a Grade A disaster that’s unfolding here in Philly.”
It's too early to give the Sixers season a label. However, if their injury issues continue in the coming months and they don't make a deep postseason run, Windhorst is barking up the right tree. With a trio of Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and George, there should be no excuses for missing out on the playoffs.
Daryl Morey knew the risks of adding George to the roster, but things look far worse than one player missing a string of games. George has struggled to reach an All-Star level, and Maxey has been shouldering a heavy workload.
Furthermore, outside of Guerschon Yabusele, few members of the Sixers roster can claim to have made a positive impact this season.
Nurse has half a season to turn the Sixers campaign around. If they miss out on the playoffs or suffer an early exit, he and Morey will be under pressure this summer.
Fans might not want to hear it, but they're closer to a total rebuild than a championship parade.
