Sixers Cut Dillon Jones, Three Others

In advance of the regular season roster deadline, the Sixers have placed forwards Dillon Jones and Cris Carroll and guards Jameer Nelson Jr. and Taye Fields on waivers, according to radio host Matt Murphy (Twitter link).

The cuts had been expected, as all four players were on non-guaranteed Exhibit 10 contracts. Philadelphia is operating too close to its first-apron hard cap to keep a 15th man to begin the regular season, so the team will carry 14 players on standard deals into opening night.

Carroll and Fields, who just signed on Friday, didn’t play at all during the preseason for the 76ers, but Jones and Nelson appeared in four games apiece. Jones, a former first-round pick who was a member of the Knicks’ championship team last season, averaged 4.3 points and 2.5 rebounds in 13.8 minutes per contest this month, while Nelson contributed 7.3 PPG on 50.0% shooting in 12.4 MPG.

In all likelihood, all four players will open the season in the G League with the Delaware Blue Coats, the Sixers’ affiliate. Their Exhibit 10 contracts make them eligible to earn bonuses worth up to $91K apiece if they spend at least 60 days in the NBAGL.

Having also converted Tacko Fall to a two-way contract, Philadelphia is now carrying a 17-man roster, with 14 players on standard contracts and three on two-way deals. Barring additional last-minute tweaks, the squad appears regular-season-ready.
