Slovenia are still waiting for their first win in the build-up to EuroBasket 2025 after falling short against Latvia.

Slovenia seemed on course for victory with a 13-point lead in the first quarter, but Latvia fought back and completed the turnaround, leaving Luka Doncic and his team with four straight losses in international friendlies.

Even more concerning than the loss was Doncic’s early exit from the game. He left after appearing to injure his knee, though early reports suggest it’s not a serious issue.

Doncic put up 26 points, five assists, and two steals to lead all players on the court.

Slovenia coach Aleksander Sekulic gave his thoughts on his display after the game.

“The start of the game was a dream. Doncic was fantastic, he played himself and everyone around him. But it’s true that it’s difficult to play all the time at such a pace against a team like Latvia with excellent scorers and the versatile Porzingis.

“We started the second half very poorly. We came out of the locker room too soft, indecisive, and allowed our opponent to play,” Sekulic said via Zurnal24.

The defeat also came shortly after Doncic left unexpectedly due to injury, something Sekulic touched on as well.

“We were left without Doncic, but we still responded well to the hosts’ lead and were right on their heels until the end.”

Coach Sekulic says Porzingis apologised for refereeing after Latvia game

Fans watching the friendly were quick to pick up on some questionable calls against Slovenia, especially early in the second half.

Those extra free throws helped Latvia close the gap from the first quarter and take control of the game.

Sekulic did not shy away from talking about it afterwards, saying:

“If it weren’t for those few black minutes at the beginning of the second half, the game could have turned the other way, and it’s certainly not just the referees who were very biased, to say the least.

“After the game, even Porzingis apologized to us for the poor refereeing.”
