Sources: Cavs would embrace LeBron James reunion

The Cavaliers would fully embrace a reunion with LeBron James for a third stint, league sources tell Hoops Wire.

James, 41, has informed the Lakers that he will not return after eight seasons with the franchise. As first reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania , agent Rich Paul notified the Lakers that James will head elsewhere in free agency.

The Warriors and Heat have also emerged as potential landing spots. But Cleveland is very much in the conversation.

James is from Akron and spent Monday golfing in his hometown. His home is still in nearby Bath. He knows the Cavs organization inside and out, and they certainly know him.

Whether all of that is enough to bring him back for one final run remains to be seen.

One thing league sources agree on is this: James would be viewed as an ideal fit alongside Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen on a Cavs team that reached the Eastern Conference finals this past season.

James, of course, spent two previous stints with the Cavs after they selected him with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft. He won two NBA MVP awards in Cleveland and delivered the franchise’s first championship in 2016, leading the Cavs back from a 3-1 deficit against the 73-win Warriors.

The biggest obstacle isn’t basketball. It’s money.

The Cavs have limited financial flexibility and would almost certainly need to create significant salary-cap room to make a reunion possible. Exactly how that would happen remains unclear, though rival executives expect Cleveland to explore every avenue if James shows serious interest.

James is coming off another productive season, averaging 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds while proving he remains among the league’s most effective offensive players, even as he approaches his 42nd birthday in December.

NBA insider Chris Haynes also reported that the Cavs are interested in a reunion.
