Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Sean Sweeney continues to gain traction as a head coaching candidate across the NBA.

Sources have indicated to DallasHoopsJournal.com that Sweeney is among the candidates interviewed and has progressed in the Phoenix Suns’ head coaching search, advancing to the second round of interviews as the franchise narrows its focus.

Now led by newly appointed general manager Brian Gregory, the Suns began the process with more than 15 candidates. As reported by Chris Haynes, the pool has been trimmed to eight finalists as the organization seeks its fourth head coach in four seasons.

Sweeney is being seriously considered alongside other top assistants and a pair of former head coaches. Phoenix is expected to decide before the NBA Draft and free agency period.

Sean Sweeney’s Coaching Profile

Sweeney has been with the Mavericks since 2021 and has worked closely with head coach Jason Kidd since their time together in Milwaukee and Brooklyn. In Dallas, he’s handled responsibilities on both sides of the ball and is particularly recognized for his developmental work with younger players, including standout center Dereck Lively II.

Sweeney is known as a defensive-minded coach with a strong tactical foundation and has earned consistent praise for his ability to build relationships with players across the roster.

Before joining the Mavericks, Sweeney served on Dwane Casey’s staff with the Detroit Pistons. His familiarity with multiple team structures, adaptability, and professionalism helped elevate his profile during last year’s hiring cycle. He was a finalist for the Pistons’ head coaching job before hiring J.B. Bickerstaff last summer.

Why the Phoenix Suns Are Interested

The Suns prioritize a coach who can build a cohesive program rooted in discipline, accountability, and organizational alignment. Sweeney’s reputation fits that mold, particularly with his player development background and clear defensive identity.

Phoenix is looking for a coach who can connect with its core, including Devin Booker, while energizing the rest of the roster and implementing a sustainable system. Sweeney established a strong relationship with Luka Dončić during his Mavericks tenure. He was recruited and helped with the Slovenian national team’s pursuit of Olympic qualification before the Paris Olympics as an assistant coach.

While David Fizdale and James Borrego are the only finalists with prior NBA head coaching experience, Sweeney represents a younger, forward-looking candidate who brings the blend of experience and upside many teams covet in today’s coaching landscape.

Phoenix is expected to narrow the field again, likely again soon, before deciding by the end of May or early June. With his deep playoff experience, developmental acumen, and established relationships, Sean Sweeney is firmly in the mix as the Suns prepare to chart their future.
