Dallas Mavericks assistant coach and longtime player development specialist God Shammgod is joining the Orlando Magic’s coaching staff as an assistant, sources told DallasHoopsJournal.com.
Shammgod’s contract with the Mavericks recently expired, and he has agreed to a new position under head coach Jamahl Mosley, who spent seven seasons as an assistant in Dallas before taking the Orlando job in 2021. The move marks another significant change to Jason Kidd’s bench as the Mavericks continue to reshape their coaching staff ahead of the 2025–26 season.
Shammgod joined the Mavericks in 2016 and became one of the organization’s most trusted voices in player development. Known for his detail-oriented, hands-on approach, he worked closely with Luka Dončić, Kristaps Porziņģis, and Kyrie Irving during his time in Dallas. He also played an active role in the team’s Summer League program. He gained widespread respect for teaching advanced ball-handling techniques, including the “Shammgod” move that has become a staple across levels of basketball.
A Brooklyn native, Shammgod starred at Providence College before being selected by the Washington Wizards in the second round of the 1997 NBA Draft. He appeared in 20 games for Washington during the 1997–98 season and went on to play professionally overseas. He returned to his alma mater as a player development coach from 2012 to 2015 before leaping to the NBA with Dallas.
In Orlando, Shammgod will help develop a young core headlined by Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner. The Magic are coming off a postseason appearance and continue emphasizing internal growth and development under Mosley’s leadership.
His departure comes shortly after the Mavericks hired Frank Vogel as associate head coach, reuniting him with Kidd following their 2020 championship run with the Los Angeles Lakers. Vogel replaces Sean Sweeney, who left to become the associate head coach of the San Antonio Spurs. The Vogel hire was first reported by DallasHoopsJournal.com.
The Mavericks may not be done reshaping their coaching staff. According to sources, former Lakers assistants Phil Handy and Mike Penberthy have emerged as candidates to join Kidd’s bench. Meanwhile, current assistant coach Jared Dudley is drawing serious interest from the Denver Nuggets for a potential promotion, sources told DallasHoopsJournal.com.
Shammgod’s exit ends a nearly decade-long tenure with the Mavericks, during which time he became one of the NBA’s most respected development coaches. His influence in Dallas extended beyond skill work, helping to establish a strong player-first culture and contributing to the growth of several franchise cornerstones.
