Sources: Jared Dudley Draws Interest from Denver Nuggets

With the Dallas Mavericks still navigating a turbulent coaching offseason, assistant coach Jared Dudley has emerged as a target for rival teams—and now, the Denver Nuggets have formally entered the picture. League sources tell DallasHoopsJournal.com that the Nuggets recently gained permission to interview Dudley for a potential bench promotion as they restructure their staff following their 2025 playoff exit.

Dudley remains under contract with the Mavericks through the 2025–26 season as the team’s No. 3 assistant, but is eligible to pursue promotions elsewhere. He has already drawn interest from the Cleveland Cavaliers and Memphis Grizzlies, and Denver’s entry into the mix further underscores the league-wide demand for his coaching presence.

The Mavericks’ coaching staff has significantly changed since their 2024 NBA Finals appearance. Sweeney, one of the most trusted voices of head coach Jason Kidd, left to become associate head coach under Mitch Johnson in San Antonio. Sources indicated to DallasHoopsJournal.com that Sweeney had not been offered an extension after the Finals, leading to his exit despite advancing in previous head coaching searches.

Multiple sources within the organization have pointed to the lack of timely extensions for key staff members—including player development coach God Shammgod—as a self-inflicted wound that could hinder the Mavericks’ long-term continuity.

Jay Triano, the former head coach of the Toronto Raptors and interim coach of the Phoenix Suns, has since been hired to fill the lead assistant role vacated by Alex Jensen, who left to coach the University of Utah. But Sweeney’s spot remains open, and Dudley’s situation is now under the spotlight.

Dudley joined Jason Kidd’s staff in 2021 shortly after retiring from a 14-year NBA career. Since then, he has developed into a respected assistant, working closely with stars like Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, and Anthony Davis. Internally, he’s seen as a bridge between the coaching staff and locker room, providing steady leadership and player-first communication.

One factor fueling Cleveland’s interest is his connection with Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson, who coached Dudley during his time with the Brooklyn Nets. Meanwhile, Memphis and Denver are evaluating him for similar roles that offer increased responsibilities on the bench.

Despite the Mavericks’ strong internal regard for Dudley, the failure to offer him a promotion amid offseason staff departures could allow another franchise to capitalize.
