Anthony Davis, who was traded by the Dallas Mavericks to the Washington Wizards at this year’s NBA trade deadline, suffered a left hand injury on January 8 against the Utah Jazz and an MRI revealed ligament damage.

However, the 2020 NBA champion didn’t undergo hand surgery, sources told DallasHoopsJournal.

Hall of Fame NBA reporter David Aldridge of The Athletic spoke to Davis on the phone about the blockbuster Mavericks-Wizards trade and the veteran scribe wrote in his piece that Davis had hand surgery.

It was a mistake, though, and Aldridge has since corrected his column.

Davis will miss the rest of the season for the Wizards, who are one of the worst teams in the NBA. Washington is better suited to lose, as the team must finish within the top eight of the 2026 NBA Draft order to retain its first-round pick.

The Wizards acquired Trae Young from the Atlanta Hawks before trading for Davis. Young is recovering from a sprained right knee and bruised quadriceps.

Davis is making $54.1 million this season. He’s eligible for a four-year, $275 million extension in August. The future Hall of Famer is averaging 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.7 blocks per game. He’s appeared in just 20 games.

A top-75 player of all time, Davis turns 33 in March. He played in only 29 games with the Mavericks, averaging 20.2 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 0.9 steals and 1.8 blocks per game. Dallas acquired Davis from the Los Angeles Lakers last season in the stunning Luka Dončić trade.

Davis has played for the New Orleans Pelicans, Lakers and Mavericks. He’s a 10-time All-Star with career averages of 24.0 points, 10.7 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.3 steals and 2.3 blocks per game.

A Chicago native, Davis told Aldridge that he wants to compete for another championship at this point in his career. It’s unknown if the star big man can accomplish that goal with the Wizards, who haven’t made the playoffs since 2021.
