Spencer Jones makes rare NBA move after Thunder offer

Spencer Jones garnered attention for his LinkedIn activity following his decision to sign an offer with the Oklahoma City Thunder this offseason.

Jones stands out as a restricted free agent, seeing the Denver Nuggets control his contract rights. Should any team offer him a contract, Denver has the power to match it and keep him on its roster for the foreseeable future.

Jones has made his move, signing a two-year deal that will give him $12 million throughout the term of the deal. Denver hasn’t announced its decision to match the offer, meaning that Oklahoma City has a chance to land him.

Jones awaits the final decision from Denver on whether to keep him or let him go to Oklahoma City. In the meantime, he made a LinkedIn post that went viral on social media given how rare it is for players to do so.

“Bet you’ve never seen a free agency announcement on LinkedIn. Neither have I. But here we are. Somewhere between refreshing my phone and waiting for the paperwork, this felt like the right place to share it. Not exactly where NBA free agency usually plays out. Maybe that’s what makes it worth sharing here. More to come,” Jones wrote.

What lies ahead for Thunder amid Spencer Jones offer

Spencer Jones broke out as a solid role player for the Nuggets last season. If the Thunder manage to land him, he would be a quality addition to their backcourt.

Jones proved himself in Denver’s rotation, playing in 64 games. He averaged 5.5 points and 3.3 rebounds per contest on shooting splits of 50.4% from the field, including 39.6% from beyond the arc. In the playoffs, he produced 6.5 points, two rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game.

Oklahoma City finished with a 64-18 record last season, securing the top seed in the Western Conference standings. They swept the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers in the first two rounds. However, they lost in seven games to the San Antonio Spurs in the West Finals.

Oklahoma City has now acquired seven second-round picks while going under the second apron. They even shed $200 million this offseason after trading away Lu Dort, Isaiah Joe and Aaron Wiggins. The team will have a unique look going into the 2026-27 season.
