Spurs Announce Stephon Castle News After Leaving Kings Game

The San Antonio Spurs entered Sunday’s game against the Sacramento Kings looking to get back on track after a one-point loss to the Golden State Warriors. Despite dropping two straight, the Spurs still hold an 8–4 record and sit fifth in the Western Conference standings.

With French superstar Victor Wembanyama ruled out ahead of the matchup, second-year guard Stephon Castle was expected to shoulder a larger share of the scoring load. Through his first 12 games, the former fourth overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft out of UConn had averaged 18.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, 7.8 assists and 1.8 steals while shooting 50.3% from the field and 22.9% from three-point range.

Castle continues to impact the game on both ends of the floor, serving as a dynamic playmaker and a strong on-ball defender.

Castle struggled through his first 16 minutes of action on Sunday, finishing the first half with just four points and five assists. But concern quickly shifted from performance to health when Castle did not return from the locker room for the second half.

Julian Champagnie started in his place, and shortly after, the Spurs announced that Castle had been ruled out for the remainder of the game with a hip injury. “Stephon Castle will not return to the game with a hip injury, per Spurs,” reported Stephen Michael of SB Nation.

It is an unfortunate development for a Spurs team already navigating the absence of Wembanyama. If Castle is forced to miss extended time, San Antonio’s depth will be tested even further.

The timing is especially disappointing given how well Castle and Wembanyama had been playing together. Their chemistry has been a bright spot early in the season, highlighted by a historic performance in which the duo became the first teammates in NBA history to each record a 20-point triple-double in the same game.

Castle’s potential absence looms even larger considering his rapid rise since entering the league. He won NBA Rookie of the Year last season and had not missed a game yet in 2025–26 before Sunday’s injury.

Now, his status for Tuesday’s matchup against the Memphis Grizzlies is in question, putting added pressure on San Antonio’s backcourt depth and overall rotation.
