Spurs Announce Stephon Castle News After Leaving Lakers Game

The San Antonio Spurs have taken a clear step forward this season, solidifying themselves as a legitimate contender in the Western Conference. While two-way superstar Victor Wembanyama has played at an MVP-level, he has been supported by an impressive cast around him.

One of the players headlining that group is point guard Stephon Castle, who has taken a major leap in his second NBA season. Through 42 games, the 21-year-old has averaged 17.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and 7.0 assists while shooting 46.7% from the field and 28.9% from 3-point range.

Even with the inconsistent perimeter shooting, Castle remains highly effective because of his ability to pressure the rim, create advantages off the dribble and operate as a secondary playmaker who complements Wembanyama’s scoring ability.

His size and defensive instincts also allow San Antonio to switch freely and stay connected on that end of the floor.

During Tuesday’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers, Castle opened the night with efficient playmaking, scoring two points on one shot attempt while recording seven assists in 12 minutes of action. However, midway through the second quarter he took a hard fall after contesting a shot at the rim.

He remained on the floor in pain as teammates gathered around him, and although he eventually walked to the locker room under his own power, he was holding his lower back in clear discomfort.

Concern grew when forward Harrison Barnes started the second half in Castle’s place. Moments later, the Spurs announced that Castle had suffered a pelvic contusion and would not return, according to Jared Weiss of The Athletic.

X-rays came back negative, easing fears of a long-term setback. With San Antonio already holding a sizable lead and on the second half of a back-to-back, the team chose to be cautious.

Castle was the fourth overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft and is a central piece of the Spurs’ long-term plans.

His continued growth is one of the biggest reasons San Antonio has accelerated its rise, and keeping him healthy will be essential as the franchise pushes toward a deep postseason run.
