The San Antonio Spurs have looked like one of the NBA’s best teams this year, fully resembling a contender in the Western Conference. While the roster is deep and features some of the strongest overall depth in the league, it is hard to imagine them reaching this level without their superstar and best player, Victor Wembanyama.

The two-way forward is one of the most dominant players in basketball, using his rare combination of length, timing, mobility and skill to overwhelm opponents.

He protects the rim at an elite level, switches onto guards without hesitation and creates matchup problems offensively with his shooting touch, face up game and ability to finish over virtually any defender.

Through 34 games, the 22-year-old has averaged 24.1 points, 11.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists while shooting 50.4% from the field and 36.4% from 3-point range.

As the Spurs prepare for the second half of a back-to-back on Sunday, they are coming off a road loss to the Charlotte Hornets in which Wembanyama struggled. He finished with just 16 points on 6-of-15 shooting along with eight rebounds and one assist.

However, his chance to bounce back on Sunday against the Orlando Magic may be in doubt. Hours before tip-off, the team announced its official injury report and Wembanyama was added, listed as questionable with left calf soreness.

The calf issue has surfaced multiple times this season and has already forced the Spurs to monitor his workload closely.

While none of the flare ups have been labeled serious, the recurring nature of the discomfort is still troubling given how heavily San Antonio relies on him at both ends of the floor. Any lower body concern is magnified for a player of his size and usage, especially with playoff positioning at stake.

That concern stands in contrast to Wembanyama’s otherwise remarkable track record since entering the league. Drafted first overall in the 2023 NBA Draft, he has quickly established himself as one of the game’s elite, earning two All-Star selections, Rookie of the Year honors, two block titles and an All-Defense nod. Protecting his availability remains the Spurs’ top priority as they push deeper into the season.
