Spurs Get Unfortunate Injury Update

The San Antonio Spurs lost to the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night, 104-93. Victor Wembanyama scored only 15 points on inefficient shooting after going scoreless in the first half. In the fourth quarter, he appeared to be in pain, grabbing at his lower back, although he remained in the game until the final seconds.

After the loss, acting head coach Mitch Johnson kept it brief but seemed to think that the injury was not serious. When asked if there was any reason to be concerned, he answered with a quick "no."

Since that press conference, the Spurs have officially downgraded their best player to "out" for their Thursday contest against the Chicago Bulls. Wembanyama joins Tre Jones, who strained his shoulder against the Sacramento Kings, as well as Riley Minix, David Duke Jr., and Harrison Ingram, who are all on assignment in the G League playing for the Austin Spurs.

On the injury report, Wembanyama's ailment was described as "low back soreness," so it's unlikely that this injury will keep him out for more than a few games or have any long-term effects.

Still, Tuesday's loss was the first game all season where the young core of Wembanyama, Jeremy Sochan, Devin Vassell, and Stephon Castle were all healthy. While the Spurs haven't been ravaged by injuries like the New Orleans Pelicans, little injuries here and there do add up, as Wembanyama has already missed three games this season.

Without Wembanyama, expect Charles Bassey and Sandro Mamukelashvili to get an extended run behind Zach Collins.
