Spurs Have a Plethora of Options in Free Agency
Scott Wachter-Imagn Images

Not to be overshadowed by trade rumors and draft choices, this offseason, the San Antonio Spurs have some big decisions to make in free agency.

The San Antonio Spurs have made significant signings during free agency over the years that have had a lasting impact on the organization. Notable signings include Bruce Bowen in 2001, Robert Horry in 2003, and LaMarcus Aldridge in 2015.

They also have some notable re-signings of players like Tim Duncan in 2003 when he signed a seven-year contract worth $122 million. There is also Devin Vassell‘s five-year, $146 million extension, which is currently the most expensive contract in franchise history.

This offseason, the Spurs have five unrestricted free agents, leaving room for plenty of re-signings or opportunities to add new faces to the team.

Spurs Free Agency

Chris Paul

The Spurs signed CP3 last offseason with the hope that pairing him with Victor Wembanyama would help the team progress faster. Despite the highs and lows of the season, CP3 managed to play all 82 games in Year 20.

He recently turned 40 and has mentioned that he does not plan on retiring before next season. With the trade for De’Aaron Fox last season, the rise of Stephon Castle, and the team holding the No. 2 pick in this year’s draft, which is projected in many mocks to be PG Dylan Harper, CP3 would very likely be stuck with a bench role.

He mentioned that a reason he came to San Antonio was that he saw a starting opportunity after spending the previous season coming off the bench for the Warriors. There may be other teams out there that can use a veteran point guard in their starting rotation.

Verdict: Sign elsewhere

Jordan McLaughlin

The Spurs acquired McLaughlin late last season as part of the trade for Fox. Even with the injuries of Wemby and Fox last season, McLaughlin played the lowest minutes of his six seasons in the league. He averaged 2.5 points per game in 18 games for the Spurs.

While all teams have bench players who receive limited playing time, re-signing McLaughlin won’t hurt the team. However, it makes more sense for the Spurs to keep those roster spots available for younger players.

Verdict: Sign elsewhere

Sandro Mamukelashvili

Mamu has spent the last three seasons of his career on the Spurs. There were times when his minutes were low, or he didn’t see the floor; however, last season after Wemby was ruled out, Mamu saw his minutes increase and had some notable performances. On March 19, he scored 34 points while shooting 13-of-14 from the field.

At 6-foot-9, Mamu is not a traditional center. He can flex to the four, score in the post, push the ball in transition, and knock down shots from beyond the arc. Him accepting fact that he might not always get minutes, while still providing depth, versatility and shooting, would be beneficial for the Spurs to have.

Verdict: Re-sign

Charles Bassey

Similar to Mamu, Bassey has also spent his last three seasons with the Spurs. He flashed a few strong performances, especially when playing alongside Wemby— the two complement each other well and have had impressive outings together.

However, Bassey has faced challenges seeing the floor due to injuries throughout his career. He has yet to play more than 36 games in a single season. At 24 years old, Bassey has the potential to recover and develop, but the risk of him getting injured again raises concerns.

Verdict: Sign elsewhere

Bismack Biyombo

The Spurs signed Biyombo late last season to consecutive 10-day contracts. Once Wemby was ruled out for the year, the team decided to sign him for the remainder of the campaign.

The 32-year-old was instantly put in the starting lineup and had some impressive performances, including a few double-doubles. At this point in his career, the Spurs could bring him back on a veteran minimum and play him when needed. While he wouldn’t start anymore, Biyombo still has the ability to contribute from the bench.

Verdict: Re-sign

Non-Spurs Free Agency

The Spurs have several free agents they could target this offseason to help achieve their goal of winning a championship. Although the team is young and talented, there are still several areas that need improvement, and these players may be able to help.

Naz Reid

Depth is always key to a championship run.

The Spurs will still need to be effective when Wemby is not on the floor. Reid, who won the Sixth Man of the Year Award for the 2023-24 season, would provide depth at the center position, whether he starts or comes off the bench.

The six-foot-nine center is a great three-point shooter and can help the Spurs improve in that area. Reid is a great ball handler which can help the team mitigate turnovers. He also excels at scoring at the rim, shooting 68.3% there last season, utilizing his impressive footwork. He would help the team become more efficient and win more games.

However, it appears Reid has strong roots in Minnesota.

Malik Beasley

The Spurs haven’t been a team known for their three-point shooting in many years.

A player like Beasley, who was second in three-pointers made this past season, can help elevate the team’s shooting from beyond the arc. He would be a good fit as his shooting ability will provide valuable floor spacing, allowing the offense to run through Wemby and Fox.

Beasley has the ability to join a team and impact winning immediately, like he just did with the Pistons. Beasley often makes the right play, leading to team success.

Tre Jones

Jones got traded from the Spurs in the deal for Fox. He landed in Chicago where he finished the season strong with the Bulls, showcasing his scoring and playmaking.

With his contract expiring and CP3 likely leaving the Spurs, Jones can help run an offensive he’s familiar with off the bench.

He is one of the best in the league at protecting the ball, which can make up for the loss of CP3, if Paul signs elsewhere. Jones is also an underrated on-ball defender, which can be useful when unsettling opposing offenses.

Bruce Brown Jr.

Brown won a championship in 2023 with the Nuggets and played a pivotal role in their Finals run. He knows what it takes to get the job done and can bring that experience to San Antonio in their hopes of getting back on the championship path.

As a versatile player and defender, he can contribute to all areas of the court.

His high basketball IQ allows him to make smart decisions and winning plays. Brown can defend multiple positions as well, which makes it easier for the team on defense.

Offensively, Brown has a good handle, allowing him to get to the basket. He also has the ability to shoot from beyond the arc, and is capable of having games with a large number of rebounds and assists. A player who does it all makes any team better and is the key to winning a championship.

Bol Bol

Adding a player like Bol to the Spurs wouldn’t only be fun to watch, but would help add depth and improve their defense.

Bol got a short opportunity this past season with the Suns to show what he can do. Offensively and defensively, he showed out and had big performances before heading back to a smaller role.

Offensively, his shot is very difficult to contest, making him tougher to defend. He is a proven three-point shooter which can help space the floor and create opportunities for himself and the players around him.

Defensively, he provides elite rim protection. The duo of Bol and Wemby would make it nearly impossible to score at the basket.

Bol also uses his length to get rebounds over the opposing players.

With the versatility and ceiling of Wembanyama, and the No. 2 pick at their disposal, the Spurs have plenty of option for what they can do in free agency this offseason. It’s on them to put the right pieces together.
