Spurs Linked to Baffling Trade Target

With Victor Wembanyama, Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan, and Stephon Castle, the San Antonio Spurs have an excellent young core in place, but they have been linked to other young players who could emerge as trade candidates like Andrew Nembhard, Anfernee Simons, and Trae Young.

Simons is a viable trade candidate because his Portland Trail Blazers are looking to rebuild and land the best draft pick possible in the 2025 NBA Draft, but the Spurs have been linked to one of his teammates, wing Deni Avdija.

Avdija spent four seasons with the Washington Wizards before being traded to Portland on draft night in 2024. In his final year in the capital, he averaged a solid 14.7 points on 37.4 percent shooting from 3-point range, but he has taken a sharp regression this year.

Given his overall lack of improvement and inability to build on what limited success he has found, there is no good reason why the Spurs would want to trade for him. He is under contract through the 2027-28 season, so he wouldn't offer much in the way of cap flexibility.

"At this point, there's a chance that the Blazers may simply not be the perfect place for him at this point in his development," wrote FanSided's Michael Saenz. "That's where a team like the Spurs could swoop in. Theoretically, you'd have to imagine that Avdija would be a natural fit in San Antonio. Next to Devin Vassell and Wemby, Avdija could find a soft landing spot."

A change in scenery hasn't done Avdija any favors so far this year, and there's little indication that coming to San Antonio would fix things. Fans have been calling for Keldon Johnson to be traded, but he is averaging more points than Avdija on similar effecency, and he only makes $3 million more per year.
