Steph Curry seemed to suggest that the Golden State Warriors expect to sign a notable veteran in free agency.
Curry was asked about the Warriors’ rumored pursuit of free agent forward Al Horford on Thursday, and indicated that he might be expecting it to happen. The star guard did not offer too many thoughts on the potential addition, but his choice of words was telling.
“He’s a champion, great player,” Curry said, via Anthony Slater of The Athletic. “When…if, when all that stuff happens, I’ll talk about it.”
Perhaps Curry had a slip of the tongue here, but this does not feel coincidental. The Warriors are one of several teams to be linked to Horford in free agency, though the 39-year-old has yet to make a decision on his future.
Horford spent the last four seasons with the Boston Celtics, but the team has essentially admitted they are going to lose him this summer. The five-time All-Star averaged 9.0 points and 6.2 rebounds in 27.7 minutes per game for Boston this past season, and can certainly play a key role for contending teams.
The Warriors have a need for frontcourt help after losing mainstay Kevon Looney to the New Orleans Pelicans. Maybe Curry already knows something about whether Horford is coming.
