When Klay Thompson left the Golden State Warriors to join the Dallas Mavericks this offseason, it marked the end of an era for the franchise. Questions immediately arose about who could step in to help Steph Curry secure another championship before time catches up with the team.
With uncertainty hanging over the Dubs, one former player had some thoughts on their future.
Golden State's 2023-24 campaign was a disappointment. The Sacramento Kings eliminated them in the Play-In Tournament, preventing them from making the playoffs. They entered the offseason with many uncertainties, and Thompson's departure to Dallas was a massive blow to their core, effectively dissolving the iconic Splash Brothers duo.
The front office attempted to land Paul George as a replacement, but it didn't pan out, leaving Golden State without a viable backup plan. The Dubs' inability to secure a significant signing left fans and analysts questioning the team's direction. Former Warriors star Stephen Jackson suggested that only two players could restore the Steph Curry-led squad to title contention.
"It's only two people that could possibly even go there and make them contenders, and they'll be Giannis [Antetokounmpo] and [Le]Bron [James]. I don't see anybody else," Jackson said. "If they can land one of those two, they could match anybody else."
The trade speculations involving LeBron James are only a rumor at this point. Reports surfaced last year that Warriors ownership explored acquiring the 38-year-old superstar at the trade deadline, but the Los Angeles Lakers and James were uninterested in the proposal. However, with the Lakers rumored to be eyeing a younger roster, the prospect of moving the four-time MVP isn't entirely off the table.

As for Giannis Antetokounmpo , the two-time MVP remains under contract with the Milwaukee Bucks through 2027. Still, the Bucks' rocky start to this season—beginning 2-8 in their first 10 games—raised questions about the Greek's long-term commitment to the franchise. Milwaukee has since rebounded into playoff contention, but a poor postseason performance could push the Bucks' star to reconsider his future.
In the past decade, no team has won multiple titles except Golden State—and they've claimed four championships. The team was led by Curry's brilliance and a deep supporting cast. However, their recent history suggests the dynasty may run out of steam.
After capturing their most recent title in 2022, the Dubs were knocked out in the second round of the playoffs the following year. This past season, they failed even to make the postseason. Currently sitting eighth in the Western Conference standings, the former champions have shown flashes of brilliance but lack the consistency of their championship years.

While "Chef Curry" continues to perform at an elite level, questions about the supporting cast remain. Without a significant roster overhaul, the former champions' hopes of returning to title contention appear slim.
Jackson's suggestion of targeting either James or Antetokounmpo underscores the gravity of the situation. Both players bring a unique skill set that could elevate the Warriors to compete against the league's best.
