Steve Kerr Announces Jonathan Kuminga News on Friday

The Golden State Warriors have been inconsistent on both ends of the floor to open the 2025–26 season. To make matters worse, point guard Steph Curry is set to miss the next week of action after suffering a right quadriceps injury in Wednesday’s loss to the Houston Rockets.

The timing is particularly disappointing because forward Jonathan Kuminga has also been sidelined with bilateral patellar tendinitis in his knee. The 23-year-old has been an efficient scorer for Golden State over the past five seasons, frequently delivering quality minutes as both a starter and a key contributor off the bench.

Through Kuminga’s first 14 games this year, he averaged 13.8 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists while shooting 47.8% from the field, 32.4% from beyond the arc and 77.1% from the free-throw line.

Kuminga’s absence has stretched across the last seven games, during which the Warriors have gone 3–4. The team finally received encouraging news on Friday, as head coach Steve Kerr announced that Kuminga has made significant progress and could return sooner rather than later.

That update comes at a critical time with Curry sidelined, giving Golden State hope that reinforcements may arrive just when the Warriors need them most. Kerr spoke with reporters after Friday’s practice and revealed Kuminga was able to participate fully without limitations.

He added that Kuminga will officially be listed as questionable for Saturday’s matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans, marking his first status upgrade since the injury. Kerr concluded by saying Kuminga will likely be a game-time decision (h/t Nick Friedell of The Athletic).

Kuminga has long been viewed as one of Golden State’s most intriguing young talents. Selected seventh overall in the 2021 NBA Draft, he entered the league with a reputation for athleticism, defensive versatility and the ability to score in transition. Over five seasons, he has developed into a reliable two-way contributor, capable of guarding multiple positions while providing efficient offense.

This past offseason, Kuminga and the Warriors endured a contract standoff that dragged on for nearly three months. He eventually signed a two-year, $48.5 million deal with a team option, according to Spotrac, a structure that left his long-term future in Golden State uncertain. The messy negotiations fueled trade speculation, and Kuminga remains a candidate to be moved at the deadline. His return to health will play a major role in shaping those decisions.

The Warriors (10-10) host the Pelicans (3-16) at 8:30 p.m. ET Saturday.
