The Golden State Warriors didn't need much help extending the Chicago Bulls' league-worst seven-game losing streak. They didn't even need Jonathan Kuminga to suit up.
Steve Kerr leaned on Jimmy Butler in his return to secure a 123-91 road win, with the former lottery pick being a healthy scratch. When asked about that decision, the Warriors HC claimed that it was all due to the roster's depth and the fit around Butler.
"Just because of the way our team looks," Kerr said after the game, per ESPN's Anthony Slater. "And Jimmy came back tonight, JK started last night, they play the same position (...) We got a lot of bodies. And so with Jimmy (Butler) coming back tonight, it made sense to play the other guys ’cause they complement him really well."
Kerr has been openly critical of Kuminga in the past, claiming that he would keep the conversations they had about his role with the team private. He also said it's not anything unusual.
"Just like everybody else who’s in this position. It happens to everybody pretty much, other than the stars. Guys come in and out of the rotation depending on who’s available, how the team’s playing," Kerr continued. "We’ve got a lot of mouths to feed. And this is what we decided to do."
Kuminga's desire to leave the team and reluctance to take a deal promptly hurt the Warriors' chances of making moves in the offseason. Then, his questionable effort and even worse attitude didn't do much to help the team's case earlier in the season.
As such, it's hard to believe he's ever going to play a meaningful role on this team, at least for as long as Butler is healthy. He'll be eligible to be traded on Dec. 15, so he may have even played his final game with the organization.
