Steve Kerr Gets Really Emotional About Special Return To San Antonio
Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

The Warriors coach was given a rousing welcome and a tribute video witnessed by a packed crowd.

It was an emotional return to the Alamodome for Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr.

Kerr was part of the San Antonio Spurs in 1999 after the side acquired him via a sign-and-trade from the Chicago Bulls. The team bagged their maiden NBA championship that season by notching up a dominant 4-1 win in the Finals over the New York Knicks.

Soon after, he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers alongside Derek Anderson but returned to San Antonio in 2002 along with Erick Barkley and a 2003 second-round pick.

He was instrumental in the Western Conference Finals against the Dallas Mavericks and the highlight performance was his four second-half three-pointers that eliminated Dallas. The Spurs won their second championship that year. In his four seasons with the Spurs, Kerr averaged 3.7 points 0.8 rebounds, and 0.9 assists.

A player who tasted success with the Bulls alongside Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Dennis Rodman — Kerr carried over his learnings to the Spurs camp and was a vital cog in the team's title runs. He has been an underrated legend in the NBA.

And it was an emotional return to the Alamodome on Friday. The Warriors coach was given a rousing welcome and a tribute video witnessed by a packed crowd that broke the NBA record for the most attendance for a game.

San Antonio Is "A Special Place": Steve Kerr

The warm welcome to San Antonio had Steve Kerr reflect on the fond memories he had with the team. While he was on the other side manning the Warriors who came into this clash on the back of three consecutive losses, the 57-year-old was just happy to be at the Alamodome and be part of the franchise's 50th Anniversary celebrations.

Per NBC Sports Bay Area, Kerr said it was a special place where he had a chance to add two more NBA titles to his name and play his part in the championship journey.

"Just to be part of this, this team and this community here for five years of my life and to be embraced by the fans and my family to be embraced here and really my kids they spent a good chunk of their childhood here. It's a special place and tonight was a great display of how special the Spurs are and how special San Antonio is. I want to say thank you to the organization and to the city for a great night."

On the season front, Golden State has had on a wobbly campaign and is 21-21 as the season hits the midseason mark. With 40 games left in the regular season, Kerr and his men will look to make a surge in the Western Conference standings hoping to defend their title.
