The Golden State Warriors recently executed a major trade, acquiring Dennis Schroder from the Brooklyn Nets without giving up a first-round pick. While it isn't the blockbuster deal fans have been waiting for, it may have shifted the NBA landscape a bit because it could make the Warriors a legitimate title contender and might have signaled the start of the Nets' firesale.

Steve Kerr expressed excitement for the move, knowing what Schroder brings to the table for Golden State. The Dubs coach would know, having been on the receiving end of great games from the German point guard.

Dennis menacing Kerr

Some might wonder what three continents Steve referred to. Obviously, the first is North America, as Schroder has played in the Association longer than he has coached.

Interestingly, they had a brief war of words in the past when Dennis suited up for the Los Angeles Lakers squad that faced the Warriors in the 2023 playoffs. Kerr was frustrated with how the Lakers "took some flops" during Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinals. Upon hearing the statement, Schroder accused the Warriors of getting away with illegal screens. It's worth noting that Los Angeles won the series.

In addition to facing one another in the NBA, Kerr also had the Schroder experience in the international arena when he coached Team USA versus Germany in the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup in the Philippines and a tuneup contest for the Paris Olympics, a match held in London.

Schroder was partly responsible for the U.S. squad's elimination in the World Cup semifinals, recording 17 points and a game-high nine assists. The "Red, White, and Blue" got some form of revenge the following year when it beat Germany in their pre-Olympic exhibition face-off despite the European phenom's double-double effort.

Kerr's new weapon

Now, the two will be on the same side, which has excited some among the Warriors faithful. The team has been struggling since running to a 12-3 record earlier in the 2024-25 season. It has fallen to the play-in picture with a 14-11 standing after its loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday.

Maybe the addition of the journeyman is just what the franchise needs to turn things around. Despite the roster already having a glut of players at the backcourt, Golden State still needs some stability on the floor when Stephen Curry sits on the bench. Schroder can also spend time on the court alongside the two-time MVP, as his energy and effort on both offense and defense can potentially make him a good complement to Curry.

It remains to be seen when the German guard will make his Warriors debut, but Kerr likely cannot wait to unleash his new weapon in kicking opponents' behinds.
