The Golden State Warriors’ 2025–26 season came to an end on Friday night in Phoenix. After Stephen Curry put on a show in the 9 vs. 10 play-in game against the Clippers in Los Angeles on Wednesday, the Suns were too much to handle from start to finish, eliminating the Warriors from making the playoffs.

Now four years removed from their last championship, real questions will need to be asked about the future of the core in Golden State, and longtime head coach Steve Kerr is at the forefront.

Kerr entered the campaign in the final year of his contract, and according to Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area, the expectation is that he won’t be returning to coach next season.

Poole wrote:

“The general belief among the Warriors – openly expressed by Draymond Green – and around the league since the weekend is that Kerr will be comfortably jobless after meeting with Lacob and Dunleavy. Most expect a decision in a matter of days, not weeks…. Two sources insist that any change of heart would require, among other factors, Kerr having renewed faith in his role as the franchise shifts toward the future,”

The 60-year-old Kerr just finished the second and final year of the two-year, $35 million extension he signed with the Warriors in 2024.

It’s been a tremendous run for Kerr leading the charge in the Bay Area, where he sports a 604–353 regular-season record along with a Coach of the Year award in 2015–16, and of course, four NBA championships (2015, 2017, 2018, 2022).

Reports have already suggested that Golden State will pursue University of Florida head coach Todd Golden, whom the Lacob family has a relationship with, according to Kevin O’Connor. A few years ago it was Klay Thompson, and now it’s Steve Kerr, as the Warriors continue to slowly turn the page on the greatest era in franchise history.
