Struggling NBA Team Reportedly ‘Likely’ to Pursue Kevin Durant

The Miami Heat, reeling from a lackluster 37-45 season and a first-round playoff sweep by the Cleveland Cavaliers, are reportedly poised to make a bold move for Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant.

On Friday morning, Evan Sidery reported on X, citing Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, that the Heat are “likely” to pursue the 36-year-old forward this offseason.

However, Miami is unwilling to part with a significant package of future draft picks, reflecting a cautious approach to acquiring Durant, who has one year left on his $54.7 million contract and will turn 37 in September.

The Heat’s proposed trade package includes Andrew Wiggins, three-point specialist Duncan Robinson, and a young prospect like Jaime Jaquez Jr. or Nikola Jovic.

This aligns with Heat president Pat Riley’s recent postseason press conference, where he acknowledged the team’s struggles, including the midseason trade of Jimmy Butler to Golden State, and stressed the need for roster changes.

Riley, who has no plans to retire at 80, expressed a desire to avoid running back the same lineup, hinting at targeting an older star like Durant if the contract terms are favorable.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to keeping Tyler Herro as a long-term piece, a player that has emerged as a cornerstone for the franchise over the recent years.

For the Suns, trading Durant could facilitate a retool around Devin Booker after missing the playoffs, despite Durant’s stellar 26.6 points per game on a 50/40/85 shooting split.

The Heat envision a core of Durant, Bam Adebayo, and Herro, potentially revitalizing their Eastern Conference standing under Erik Spoelstra’s guidance.
