Success in the Failure
Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

This season didn’t finish the way  the Knicks hoped but they did make big strides as an organization. Can this Knicks season be labeled as a success?

Well, after a disappointing Game 7 defeat to the Pacers this past Sunday, the Knicks thrilling season came to an unfortunate end. Ultimately, the Knicks slew of injuries finally caught up to them while the Pacers took full advantage of the opportunity.

In contrast, despite the loss, it was encouraging to see O.G Anunoby and Josh Hart put forth an effort to play through their injuries. However, Anunoby was only able to play about four minutes and once Jalen Brunson fractured his hand in the third quarter, the chances at winning the game were slim to none.

Two Sides of The Coin

After the loss, Brunson addressed the media in the postgame press conference, where he had a blunt response to a question about this season being a success.

Now, from a competitor’s perspective, this is the type of attitude you’re supposed to have. Also, as a fan, you love to see this kind of response. Clearly, it shows how determined Brunson is to deliver a championship to this city and it sets the tone for the future. On the other hand, even though this is the mindset that’s needed to win, I wouldn’t say that the season wasn’t a successful one, especially for Brunson as an individual. In the end, the outcome might not have been desired but it doesn’t erase how great of a season this was for the Knicks.

A 2024 to Remember

The 2023 part of the season was a bit rocky for the Knicks. They barely were a .500 team when 2023 was coming to a close. Once the Knicks made the trade for O.G Anunoby right before the new year, everything changed for this team. The Knicks proceeded to have the best record in the month of January (14-2) and went on a nine game win streak heading into the month of February.

Also, even though the Knicks were battling with injuries, Jalen Brunson took his game to a MVP Caliber level. Brunson’s heroics alongside the growth of the role players is the reason why the Knicks ended with the 2nd seed in the Eastern Conference and won a 1st round series for the second consecutive season. The growth and grit that this team displayed throughout the past few months stamps this season as a success. We found out what this team is really made of, which could potentially lead to a bright future. Hopefully, the Knicks can take this momentum into next year.

A Win for NYC

As we all know, besides the first couple of years of the Carmelo Anthony era, the Knicks have been a laughing stock for most of the 21st Century. In the past, whether it has been bad contracts, horrendous draft selections, or non effective coaching hires, the Knicks have been an absolute mess of a franchise. Recently, since the arrival of Knicks President Leon Rose, the Knicks organizational structure and decision making has changed for the better. This season has proven to be a prime example of the positive shift with the team.

Finally, for the first time in years, there’s a sense of belief that the Knicks can legitimately win a title in the near future. The way this team was able to compete despite the injuries has given fans hope and shown that there’s a strong culture that’s been built. This season has made people take the Knicks seriously again and set a foundation for the organization to build upon. When you are able to do something like that for a franchise that has suffered like the Knicks have, it speaks volumes to how much of a success this season was, even if the outcome wasn’t.

In closing, Congratulations to the Knicks organization on a remarkable season. Let’s make the right offseason moves and run it back next season! GO NEW YORK GO NEW YORK GO!
