Suns Admit Massive Kevin Durant Mistake After Brutal Season

The 2024-25 season was nothing short of a calamity for the Phoenix Suns.

Many fans expected the Suns to bounce back strongly after the Minnesota Timberwolves swept them out of the NBA Playoffs in Round 1.

Instead of competing for one of the top seeds in the Western Conference, the Suns had to fight to stay above water while aiming for the NBA Play-In Tournament.

The Suns had a chance late in the season to get that No. 10 seed, but it was pretty much all she wrote when he went down with an ankle sprain with just two weeks remaining in the regular season.

Suns admit massive Kevin Durant mistake

With the season in doubt at the trade deadline, the Suns started listening to offers for Durant.

While the team kept the 15-time All-Star, whether it was to make one last push for the playoffs or because they didn't hear an offer they liked, the damage had been done.

According to ESPN's Brian Windhorst, the team didn't tell Durant they were shopping him.

"Privately, the Suns admit they made a mistake by not involving Durant earlier in the process. They had hoped to keep the discussions closed, the way the Dallas Mavericks did with Luka Doncic, but when the Suns inevitably had to discuss scenarios with third teams to find a way to execute a deal, word leaked across the league," wrote Windhorst.

Windhorst goes on to write that there were teams that were definitely interested in Durant's services.

"And while the idea of a midseason roster adjustment fizzled in February, the team learned some valuable information: that there was robust interest in Durant, including from the Minnesota Timberwolves, Miami Heat, New York Knicks, Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs, ESPN's Shams Charania reported recently," wrote Windhorst.

Durant and his agent Rick Kleiman are flying to Phoenix to discuss his future with the organization.

It would be interesting to see what kind of haul the Suns could get in return for Durant and whether it would priotize draft picks or players in return.

If the trade happens, it will shake the NBA world and create more questions than answers. Whether or not Suns fans will be happy with the result remains to be seen.
