Suns Projected to Draft Point Guard of Future With ‘Major Potential’ in 2025

The Phoenix Suns have some crucial roster decisions to make this summer and it begins with the 2025 NBA Draft in June.

Of course, the Suns do not own their first-round pick in the draft as it conveyed to the Houston Rockets due to a prior trade as Houston will have the 10th overall selection in the upcoming draft.

While Phoenix does not have their own selection, they do own the Cleveland Cavaliers’ first-round pick which is the 29th overall selection.

Phoenix has a ton of areas they need to fill on their roster, especially if they decide to move on from both Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal but one that sticks out is the point guard position.

The Suns have lacked a true starting point guard since they built their big three of Devin Booker, Durant and Beal, making Booker become their starting point guard, which is not his natural position.

Because of this, CBS Sports’ Kyle Boone has them selecting their potential point guard of the future with the 29th pick as he has projected them to take Labaron Philon, a freshman out of Alabama.

“There's likely to be significant interest from smart teams late in the first round and early in the second round in a young talent like Philon, who flashed major potential in spurts at Alabama as a true freshman,” Boone wrote. “He's an exciting on-ball defender with burst and ball skills to grow into a starting guard.”

Philon played well in his first collegiate season last year and he still has a ton of developing to go through but it is clear that he could be a potential steal if he falls to the late first round or early second round.

Last season, the 19-year-old averaged 10.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 45.2% from the field and 31.5% from three at Alabama.

It is clear that Philon needs to continue to improve his outside shooting but he makes up for it with his defensive abilities and he has enough talent to turn into the next starting point guard of the Suns if they choose to select him.
