The resurrection of the Phoenix Suns franchise starts at the 2025 NBA Draft. The franchise is stuck above the second apron, with the most expensive roster in the association. General manager Brian Gregory is expected to trade 15-time All-Star Kevin Durant to help with many of organization’s problem. However, the Suns will need to start thinking about its future as it was the second oldest team in the league in 2025 and need some much needed youth on the team.
It is unknown how much draft capital Gregory and his staff can get in return for the eventual Durant deal. However, as of right now, Phoenix as the 29th pick in the NBA draft and has a chance to add a dynamic, young player onto the roster to add some energy. CBS Sports released a four-person mock draft, with all of the analysts picking the Suns to go in different directions.
Freshman Will Riley was one of two frontcourt players name. In his lone season with Illinois, he averaged 12.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists. At 6’8, Riley has the frame to play at the professional level, but will need to pack more muscle to handle the physicality on the next level.
Kyle Boone had Phoenix filling its center problem with 7’1 senior Maxime Raynaud. The Frenchman averaged 20.2 points, 10.6 rebounds and 1.4 blocks. Raynaud has the size to battle in the paint, while shooting 34.7% from 3 on 5.5 attempts per game.
Clayton Jr. is the most notable name on the list, just leading the Florida Gators to its first National title since 2007. The senior guard averaged 18.3 points and 4.2 assists in his final collegiate year, earning All-American honors. Clayton Jr. could add some much needed scoring to the Suns’ Bench, being a stellar spark plug for the team.
The final name and guard on the list is Cedric Coward. The Fresno, California native spent his first two collegiate years at Eastern Washington, with his best year being 15.4 points and 6.7 rebounds on 38.3% from beyond the arc. Coward kept that efficiency when he transferred to Washington State in his senior season, shooting 40% from the 3-point line on five attempts per game.
Coward averaged a career high 17.7 points per game, and could be a knockdown shooter in the corner for Devin Booker to find in open space.
