Mitchell is putting up stellar numbers this season. He’s averaging 30.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game while shooting 49.5% from the field, 38.9% from beyond the arc and 85.0% from the free-throw line.
The Cavaliers will probably only trade Mitchell if he requests a trade. The six-time All-Star and Evan Mobley are untouchable in trade talks, according to NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN.
Cleveland had the top record in the East last season but lost to the Indiana Pacers in the second round of the playoffs in five games. The Wine and Gold haven’t advanced past the conference semifinals with Mitchell, Mobley, Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen leading the way.
The Cavaliers acquired Mitchell from the Utah Jazz in 2022. Cleveland lost to the New York Knicks in the first round of the 2023 playoffs and fell to the Boston Celtics in the second round of the 2024 playoffs.
Mitchell thought the Jazz would trade him to the Knicks in 2022. The 29-year-old was born and raised in New York and wanted to play for the Knicks.
However, Mitchell has repeatedly stated that he enjoys living in Cleveland and loves playing for the Cavaliers. The Louisville product signed a three-year, $150 million extension with the franchise in July 2024.
Mitchell is averaging 26.8 points per game in a Cleveland uniform. It will be fascinating to see if he retires with the Cavaliers or plays for another team.
