It won’t be a surprise if Klay Thompson decides to leave the Dallas Mavericks camp.
Despite winning their season finale against the Chicago Bulls, the Mavericks are officially out of the NBA playoff contention. While fans think this is the worst thing happened to them, it’s not going to be any better going forward.
Recently, the Mavs’ shooting guard didn’t sugarcoat things when asked about his future with the team, and his response raised more questions than answers.
Following Dallas’ game against the Bulls, Thompson was asked whether he sees himself returning next season. His reply was as honest as it was uncertain.
“That’s a hard hitter,” he said. “I’m not sure. I’m under contract so I do, but I’ve definitely learned in my time in Dallas that things can change on a dime.”

However, that statement perfectly captures the chaos surrounding the Mavericks over the past year. From blockbuster roster moves to front office shakeups, the four-time NBA champ has experienced firsthand how quickly situations can evolve in the league.
The 34-year-old guard signed with Dallas in 2024 with hopes of contending for another championship. Instead, the Mavericks stumbled to a 26-56 record, missing the playoffs for the second straight season despite reaching the Finals just two years ago.
Individually, Thompson remained productive, averaging 11.7 points while shooting over 38% from beyond the arc and surpassing 200 three-pointers for the 11th time in his career.
Klay Thompson’s future with the Dallas Mavericks suddenly feels uncertain, especially after his latest comment on a probable future.
After the season-ending win, Thompson admitted he isn’t sure what lies ahead. That uncertainty reflects Dallas’ dramatic shift. What was once a contender built around Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving has now transitioned into a youth-focused team led by rookie sensation Cooper Flagg.
For a veteran like Thompson, entering the final stretch of his career, that kind of rebuild may not align with his championship ambitions.
Despite posting career-low scoring numbers (11.7 PPG), he remained elite from deep, knocking down over 200 three-pointers for the 11th time in his career. His shooting still holds value, especially for a Mavericks team that needs spacing around its young core.
However, the bigger question is direction. Dallas could prioritize development, while Thompson may prefer a contender.
