LeBron James’s longevity is unreal. Entering his 23rd NBA season, the Los Angeles Lakers superstar is still producing elite numbers while competing against players nearly half his age. That alone has forced even his biggest critics to rethink everything they once believed about sustained greatness.

One of his fiercest rivals has offered a brutally honest breakdown. Paul Pierce, never known for soft takes, has peeled back the layers behind James’ longevity.

Paul Pierce Explains Why LeBron James Is Still Dominating

Coming off another strong stretch in the 2025–26 season, where James continues to average over 20 points per game while leading Los Angeles, the conversation around his longevity has only intensified. Speaking on the Truth and Ticket Podcast alongside Kevin Garnett, Pierce broke down exactly why the 41-year-old is still operating at an elite level.

“I think he loves it. I mean he takes care of his body like nobody else. I mean, he’s been a blueprint for a lot of this generation on how to take care of your body. And when your spending that amount of money on being ready to play and being healthy, that’s love because I started doing a lot of things he did towards the end because I didn’t know a lot of stuff either. I mean the weights was there but you know, you didn’t know about the cold tubs and stuff started coming in. Like, more and more mandatory to where they were putting the ice baths in the facilities. They weren’t there when I first got to the league. You know we had a jacuzzi. You got to just turn the jacuzzi off, throw ice in there. But and then again, even if LeBron wins a championship this year and if he wins another one and he gets to six rings, if we consider LeBron behind Jordan, if LeBron wins two more rings with the Lakers, I think you still couldn’t put him ahead of Jordan.”

Pierce highlights James’ insane investment in body maintenance, reportedly over $1.5 million annually. Cryotherapy, hyperbaric chambers, a strict diet, and sleep discipline. The blueprint is science-backed consistency.

Pierce admits the league evolved because of James. Ice baths, recovery tech, and performance routines are now standard. Back in Pierce’s early days, players improvised with ice in jacuzzis. That gap explains why LeBron James’ career arc looks so different.

Even if LeBron James adds more rings with the Los Angeles Lakers, the former Boston Celtics legend still places Michael Jordan ahead in the GOAT debate. That’s where admiration meets old-school loyalty.

James has redefined what an NBA career can look like. At 41, he’s dictating games. As Pierce put it, that doesn’t happen without love for the grind.
