The 2025 WNBA regular season has wound down to the last two weeks, and teams are making their final pushes for the playoffs. With teams down to just six or seven games left, players only have a few chances left to make their case for individual honors as well. Who will rise above the rest and take home the 2025 WNBA MVP award? Here is a look at the top candidates.
A’Ja Wilson (pictured above) is looking to win her fourth WNBA MVP award. The Las Vegas Aces center won the award in 2020, 2022, and 2024. If she were to win her fourth MVP this season, she would be the first player in league history to accomplish the feat. Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie, and Lauren Jackson are the only other players to win three MVPs.
Wilson’s season averages are down slightly from her numbers a season ago, but she still ranks among the top players in the league in several categories. The 6’4″ South Carolina grad was averaging 23.1 points (2nd), 10.1 rebounds (2nd), 3.1 assists, 1.6 steals (9th), and 2.2 blocks (1st) heading into Tuesday. Wilson has led the Aces to the second-best record in the league’s Western Conference at 25-14.
Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas heads into Tuesday night’s game with the Los Angeles Sparks leading the league with 9.2 assists per game. Add to that averages of 16.0 points, 8.8 rebounds (3rd), 1.6 steals (8th), and 0.5 blocks, and she has established her case for the award. Thomas is one of only two forwards (Candace Parker) ever to lead the WNBA in assists. She led the league in total assists each of the last two seasons.
Thomas put up a triple-double in her last game, recording 13 points, 12 rebounds, 16 assists, and two blocks against the Golden State Valkyries on Friday. The triple-double was her sixth of the 2025 season–a new league record. No other player in the league has more than one triple-double this season. Thomas’ 21 career triple-doubles are the most in league history.
Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier had a monster game last time out in Indiana. Collier put up 32 points, nine rebounds, two assists, and two steals against the Fever. It was her first game back after missing seven games with an ankle injury. Collier leads the league in scoring with 23.9 points per game. She is also fifth in blocks with 1.6, fourth in steals with 1.8, and tenth in rebounds with 7.8 per game. The seven-year veteran has been one of the best free-throw shooters in the league this season, connecting 90.7% of the time. Collier has piloted her team to the best record in the league at 30-7.
While the WNBA has a lot of stars, these three have pulled into a tier of their own this year. Caitlin Clark has only played in 12 games due to multiple injuries. Angel Reese has missed ten games as well, and she had some issues with turnovers in her sophomore season. I’m sure that those two, who have become the focus of so many of the fans this season, will be hearing MVP talk in the future. This year, though, belongs to Collier, Thomas, and Wilson.
So, who wins? That is a tough call. Collier leads the league in scoring average, but she has missed ten games. Wilson has the edge in rebounds and blocks. Thomas has a big edge in assists and has all those triple-doubles, but she also has more turnovers. If I had a vote for MVP, and I don’t, I would have to go with Wilson to win her fourth right now. She has played the most games and plays better on the defensive end of the floor than the other two. The voters will be watching these last few games closely because it is just that close.
