Happy 42nd birthday to 10-time NBA All-Star, 2012-13 NBA scoring champion and three-time Olympic Gold Medalist, Carmelo Antony!
Anthony was selected third-overall by the Denver Nuggets in the 2003 NBA Draft after leading the Syracuse Orange to the program’s first NCAA title as a freshman. He immediately showed off why, averaging 21.0 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists-per-game as a rookie, losing out on the Rookie of the Year award to some guy named LeBron James.
That would be the first of 14-consecutive 20 point-per-game seasons Anthony posted to begin his career, with seven of those coming in Denver before he was traded midseason to the New York Knicks in 2010-11. He won the NBA scoring title with 28.7 points-per-game, and he made six-straight All-Star appearances for New York. But the Knicks made the playoffs just three times and won only one series in his tenure.
Despite his lack of postseason success in the NBA, Anthony is one of the most decorated players in the history of Team USA Basketball, becoming the first player to win Gold three times and setting records in Olympic points, rebounds and games.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. How many of the rookies to average at least 20 points-per-game as a rookie in the Three-Point Era (since 1979-80) can you name in five minutes?
Good luck!
