The Klay Thompson trade Heat haven’t offered Mavericks

The future of Dallas Mavericks sharpshooter Klay Thompson has been up in the air since the start of NBA free agency heading into the end of August. Thompson is still with the Mavericks after rumors swirl about potential buyout and trade options.

On the latest edition of Clutch Scoops. ClutchPoints senior NBA reporter Brett Siegel laid out where Thompson is regarding his immediate basketball future.

“Basically, delayed; it’s on Klay, and it still holds true today that there have been no talks to this point between the Mavericks and Klay Thompson on a potential buyout. The Miami Heat continue to loom as his biggest suitor, but that is in the event of a buyout. They want to sign Klay Thompson using the rest of their mid-level exception and bring him into that Ray Allen type of role, when they had their big three of LeBron, Chris Bosh, and Dwayne Wade.

Siegel added, “That’s the type of role that they want Klay Thompson to play. They want him to be a catch-and-shoot guy that has championship experience. He’s a future Hall of Famer and can come in next to Bam Adebayo, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and really hold things together for this team on the perimeter.”

Earlier in August, it appeared that the Heat were willing to acquire Thompson via a trade. Siegel mentioned Nikola Jovic as a player that would make sense in a trade, given their similar salaries.

“It does seem like the Miami Heat are a viable landing spot. Again we mentioned Nikola Jovic as an almost identical salary match for Thompson. We will see if a deal gets done there,” Siegel said in early August.

But regardless of Thompson’s future, he’s made it clear that he wants to contribute to a franchise contending for a championship.

“I want to compete for a championship. Not necessarily win another one, but have the chance to go and try and get another one,” Thompson said on a Twitch stream in mid-August. “I want to play a role on a team that can make a deep playoff run, whether it’s this season or next season. That’s really my only goal.”
