The Minnesota Timberwolves have finalized their roster for the 2025–26 season with the signing of Bones Hyland. Before that move, fans speculated about how the team would address its need for guard depth.
Names like Russell Westbrook and Malcolm Brogdon were floated as potential backups for Mike Conley. But instead of pursuing a veteran with more experience, the Timberwolves chose to re-sign Hyland—a clear signal that they expect Rob Dillingham to take on a bigger role this season.
With Conley entering the twilight of his career and showing signs of decline last year, the pressure is on Dillingham to validate President of Basketball Operations Tim Connelly’s decision to trade up for him at No. 8 in the 2024 NBA Draft.
The 20-year-old guard flashed tantalizing potential as a rookie and again during Summer League. He showed explosive speed, the ability to break down defenses, and creativity as both a scorer and playmaker. Still, inconsistency from three, turnover issues, and defensive lapses limited his opportunities in his first year.
That’s about to change. The Wolves’ quiet offseason, coupled with Nickeil Alexander-Walker’s departure to Atlanta, all but guarantees Dillingham heavier minutes. Growing pains are inevitable— cold shooting nights, defensive struggles, and the occasional costly mistake— but the opportunity is there for him to cement his place in the rotation.
His upside is exactly what Minnesota needs. During last year’s playoff run, Anthony Edwards often shouldered the offense without consistent help from a secondary creator. Dillingham has the tools to fill that void. If he can grow into that role, the Wolves won’t just remain contenders— they could finally push past the Western Conference Finals ceiling that has stifled them the past two seasons.
Minnesota doesn’t need Dillingham to be a star to make the playoffs. But if this team truly wants to reach its first NBA Finals, he has to make a real impact. Ideally, as the season unfolds and his confidence builds, Dillingham can transition into the starting lineup, easing Conley’s burden while giving Edwards the support he desperately needs.
